Clean Sharm

Sharm’s problems with garbage disposal have become increasingly worse; the surrounding desert and the inner and outer city streets were offending many eyes of residents and visitors.
The speed, at which Sharm grew, was too fast - the existing system of disposal and recycling could not keep track.
The governor of South Sinai and the city council of Sharm reacted, and several measures were taken:
• Free plastic bags in shops are banned since 1.1. (mind you – there is a grace period of few months, which is probably why we don’t see a lot of it yet…)
• Littering is forbidden (although nobody seems to know about it yet…)
• A new company has been contacted to take care of garbage disposal.
These are highly important and timely efforts to save our beautiful environment, which will hopefully show results very soon. A turn for the better is long overdue; the situation is quite desperate, as these pictures show (and actually any look out of your car window, wherever you go…)
To get the much wanted results, the residents of Sharm have to help: by active participation with trying to reduce personal garbage as much as possible, and also by actively spreading the word. Any environmental initiative can work only, if old (and often dear) habits are altered.
The Sharm Women Club is starting a new initiative on this matter during its next meeting on 2.2.09: “Sharm Goes Clean”. Mr. Said Draz of ‘Sharm for Environmental Services” will attend to explain their work, and the fundaments for the new project “Clean Sharm” will be laid.
SWC February Meeting: Monday, 2.2.09, 19.30 in the HYATT Hotel, all women are welcome to attend!
